CHAPTER NINE

Less than an hour later, Skylar found himself sitting cross-legged in the dirt outside the cube of one of Maggie’s neighbors. Life was like that. One moment you’re going to the confectioner’s for ice cream with a beautiful woman, the next you’re trying to impress said woman by letting her neighbor’s injured dog drool on your pants.

But there was no way even he could’ve said no to the panicked communication from the dog’s family.

He stroked his hand over the ham-sized head resting in his lap. “That’s it, Tiny. Relax.”

The Great Dane gazed up at him, his liquid brown eyes full of trust, and a small whimper vibrated in the dog’s throat.

Who in their right mind named a dog this size, Tiny? Hercules fitted much better. Or Brutus…or Magnum. Yes, Magnum was a great name for this dog.

Tiny released a long, contented sigh and closed his eyes. Muscles that’d been tense and unyielding from pain ten minutes before, now had all the resistance of jelly.

“Ah.” Mags breathed out the word. “I think he’s out, Sky. Are you ready?”

Skylar met her gaze. “Yes.”

It’d do no good to express his apprehension now, not with Tiny’s family crouching a few feet away. But Mags knew. She’d reasoned with him in the skimmer that he could tell her if the dog had really broken its leg, and give her the location of the fracture. Or fractures.

“Go for it, then.” She winked at him, and the surety that he could do anything as long as she was around filled his soul.

He ran his tongue over his suddenly too-dry lips and gave her nod. Then focused deep inside himself, to the place his Gift originated from. At his center, just below and behind his heart, the power stirred, flowed, and spread outward into his arms and through his fingers.

The inner workings of Tiny’s long foreleg became visible to him. The muscles, veins, arteries, and finally the bones.

And the thin line of a fracture. “I see it. Move your hand halfway down his leg…there. You’re right over it.”

“The ulna,” she murmured. “Is it a clean break? Are the bones lined up like they could knit themselves together? Or do they need to be manually aligned?”

“Clean and lined up.”

“Lucky pup.”

A chill ran down his spine. Just the thought of manipulating bones into place…ugh. But there was no question that he’d help her do it if she needed him.

Maggie rummaged through her box of veterinarian supplies and pulled out a hand-sized package. “Castwrap ought to do it.”

One of the dog’s human family members made a sound of disbelief. “You’re going to wrap it with an Ace bandage?”

“Not exactly,” Maggie replied as she unrolled the wrapper. “Once it’s wrapped, the material will harden into an unbreakable shell as strong as plaster casts used to be, but more comfortable. As the bone heals, the wrap will become more flexible until he can walk normally.”

In less than two minutes, she had Tiny’s leg wrapped in a thin bandage. “There. It’s already hardening.”

The woven crisscross pattern of the material really was smoothing itself into a solid surface.
